All Things Ralph

"... for the heart is an organ of fire!" ("The english patient")

This is one quote that I will always remember. I love it when words create a picture in your mind and your fantasy can go on a journey...

Or maybe thinking about Ralph and his relationships (past and present) from "Sunshine":

"I loved you. I seduced you and you let me because you knew I was safe. You knew I would always stand by you." (Some truth in there?)

Or simply the little sentence with a meaning as big as the universe: "I can't go home - Tessa was my home." ("The constant gardener")

Anyone else whose got a quote to share that maybe means something special to yourself or creates a picture in your mind?

It just came to my mind that this could be an interesting thing to share with each other. You can't really discuss such a thing because it is always subjective. Wanna share?

"Pain is easy to write. In pain we're all drapply individual. Nut what can one write about happiness?"
("The End of the Affair")... That's very true, to me. Yes, it isn't so difficult to write pain, but happiness is more difficult to describe.

"To be is to be perceived" ("The End of the Affair") I think everyone feels the need to be perceived... that makes us feel alive.

Recently I had a very special gift from a dear friend of mine: "Sunshine" dvd... I had the chance to watch it again and I'll keep watching it, whenever possible!), after Agnes kindly had lent to me her copy, last month. The following is one of the quotes which I keep in my heart:

"For the first time in my life, I walked down the street without feeling like I was in hiding. My great grandfather Emmanuel must have been the last Sonnenschein to feel like this. I knew the only way to find meaning in my life, my only chance in life, would be to account for it. My grandmother's words return to me; "Try to photograph what's beautiful in life." By the time I finish this story, the third tragic misadventure of the 20th century was over. After the monarchy and fascist rule, the communist regime also went up in smoke. I remembered the recipe book that we had lost and suddenly realized that the family secret was not to be found on its pages. It was preserved by my grandmother. The only one in our family who had the gift of breathing freely." Ivan Sors

Well, I think that breething freely is a wonderful gift.

I love Sunshine. There is one simple sentence in that film that I believe speaks a great truth and encapsules the story.......

To Linda: ... I don't have an answer, but I do think often all of us are afraid to look deeply into ourselves and also to be looked at by others, because we don't want to suffer a great deal and we don't want to discover something we may not like...

To Lena: I agree with your choices, both of them.

To Lena: These are both great lines! I've always loved the one from The English Patient.

There is a quote from Michael Ondaatje's novel which I loved as well. It's spoken by Almasy, but it wasn't in the film.

Lena is right - that's beautiful! I guess they could have done a 4 hour movie out of it and we would have soaked it all up! I also have to read the book!!!

I strongly recommend the book, but don't expect the story to really mirror the movie or it might disappoint you. That would be sad because it is a wonderful, rich story. I think seeing the film first helped me visualize the characters and settings as I read the story, but the book goes deeper and wider than the film would have been allowed to in such a limited time. Anthony Minghella's translation from page to screen was brilliant! While a lot had to be adjusted to accommodate making the film, the spirit and essence of the story is very much present. I think the book and the movie complement each other well. I also have to recommend the audio book which Ralph recorded. He was absolutely wonderful in telling this story. It just completes the experience! : )

"I live in other people's worlds. If their world is beige, then my world is beige". When asked by Doris about his world. He must have been so lonely, living vicariously like that. Maybe, at first, having a drink made him feel better. From Bernard and Doris. :(

Also from B&D. Doris says "you don't f... me". No. "You don't steal from me" "Do you steal from me?" No. "What do you want from me?" "To take care of you" Doris is stunned. "Just to take care of you".he says quietly. Fiennes deliver of his lines as Bernard Lafferty, was exceptional in this movie, he was Perfect.
