Ralph Fiennes Network

All Things Ralph

Okay, I love a good discussion, and this one has been bubbling about for the past week since the Globes, and frankly has been going on more than 10 years after his losses for Schindler's List and snubs for The English Patient.

First let me say I am a tried and true fan of Ralph Fiennes. But....I wish he would play the Hollywood game just a little bit. Of course many of us love him because he isn't a mainstream action star...he's the quintessential "odd bod" like many of his characters.

Ralph Fiennes is an acting genius. The fact that he has not been recognized by his peers needs examining. I think it's his attitude. Nobody buys it frankly...and that's why he doesn't win. It's not because he's unpopular, but I think because he is one of those actors who acts like they are too good to play the Hollywood game. To say you don't care about winning awards is frankly a load of bull sh*t, and that is the attitude that basically turns off voters in these award races.

Ralph isn't warm and fuzzy, as Almasy said...he's not good at social graces...yet we hear in articles about how he's fun in real life, does all kinds of crazy passionate stuff in his private life...yet not much of that side of him comes through in interviews, in PR related situations, red carpets, etc. Frankly I think Hollywood thinks RF has a stick up his arse and is too good for Tinsel town.

So that's my take on why he doesn't win awards. I want Ralph to be recognized for his amazing work, and I want "Oscar winning actor" to prefix his name in every article. I think it's entirely possible to be a dignified actor and still be a little bit Hollywood. Come on Ralph...you can do it...just a couple more parties, get the tongues wagging...take out some hot actress...somewhat close to your age...get some buzz going for your fine self...you deserve it ;-)

my two cents;-)

Well spoken Zsu, I thoroughly agree, thoroughly. Thank you for your thoughtful observations of Ralph Fiennes masterworks of 2008. No one else on the screen or stage can transform themselves the way Fiennes does, no mask no make-up!! Finally Oscar is a joke? Yes!

The matter is that I'm sorry for him, I fear that the continuous rejections will harm him . In the newer interviews reporters often mention, he isn't sure in his talent anymore. Really, inside he is a shy boy.. This type needs the recognition of his work, the reinforcement of his self-confidence. I don't want to see him recognized post mortem like Heath Ledger. I'm anxious for him not to slip into a depression. (I hope it's only my anxiety and he's a strong soul)

Zsu, think about that. :) Your anxiety is maybe your own disappointment for him.
I do not think he will slip into a depression... For him, to act is Life, he loves it, he would probably slip into depression if he could not act! Yes, inside he is a shy boy, but he counters this very well with all of his activities. I just hope he will find love very soon......let's focus on that event, and not on not winning any Awards for a while. What do you think? This is not meant as a criticism of your comment, but me trying to lighten it all up. :) Bugger the Awards Zsu!!!

I remember he was quite disappointed when he wasn't nominated for TCG, but I - as trugannini - don't think he will slip into a depression because he is not nominated, or is nominated occasionally and doesn't win. Maybe he is disappointed or sad at first, but I'm sure he comes over it. He knows after all that he is a great actor, and that he does great choices in film and theatre. He doesn't need awards to know that (although it is nice of course for any actor to get awards..."it's like applause, and every actor needs applause"...that's what Ralph said once in an interview).
He's a great actor and a wonderful very intelligent man. Why I feel myself anxious for him is that he declared in an interview that award is recognition. and then the quantities of rejection... I was astonished to hear from the reporter's mouth that Ralph doesn't believe in his own talent . Everybody needs the reinforcement and recognition of his/her work.
The other sentence whar he said and what depressed me a bit was when he spoke from stardom and told, he isn't in this league.
Of course, I believe in his intelligence and hope, that the day of recognition will arrive.
i cant believe i am commenting again but i must.......
in the area of fine art and i use that term loosely, we often see some real schlock work embraced by the public and raised to heights that better work with more subtleties and finesse will never see.............prints, series..stuff that people "like"...RF's work is decidedly finely wrought but it is not necessarily the stuff populist/professionalawards are given two..i..could live forever happy if the academy awards were cancelled for eternity........
on the other handif God, or the Universe if you prefer has accepted Ralph Fiennes as a professional working actor since his early adulthood able to eat and pay his bills with acting...then gosh darnit.the man is a success...there are scores of highly trained actors and actresses who never work and are talented......it is a small field upon which to play and there is only one oscar in each category every year...........we all want our home team to win...so naturally we all want hin to win........but he wins every time he gets arole and does his beautiful specific and wellthought out work.........i dont know why i am belaboring this...............every dog has his day.........and maybe just maybe rf works too hard........maybe he needs to loosen up , lighten up and go with the flow....forgive me.............and maybe his intense sense of privacy works against him...not because he needs to be all over the papers but so he can let the audience in just a little bit more but none of it matters because it aint over till the fat lady sings...........and i can't wait to see uncle vanya.........and that is on stage...............
if he didnt have that particular appeal he has had he might be in regional theatre somewhere...not becasue of lack of skill but for lack of appeal.......it aint fair............
we must do things in our lives for reasonsa other than recognition although recognition is a real kick and an immune system booster i understand........
my freeling is that fiennes is still developing as a human..and that is as it should be and he is maturing and there will be a day where all of this comes together in some undeniable choices and realizations on screen and or stage..........not that he has failed heretofore..............I for one would rather get my recognition in one or more of oone of my mature decades than just because i was a pretty boy with undeniable sex appeal............i have said it once andi will say it again the best is yet to come...oscar or no oscar...he is a hardworking man......and no doubt he has a few bucks in the bank against the wolf at the door............he is a grown and now mature working artist........frankly does he need the pressure every year of trying to win an oscar...

One may exactly look, on this occasion: Can be that I me crazily, however, one compares d `Onofrio in youtube (how many people there click) and with Fiennes: less, although he is just no worse actor, only one other kind has to position itself. What are honourings? Who distributes them and after which bases one goes there? Fiennes maybe does not have what wants to see Hollywood, but what this already means: nothing, he knows himself what he is worth (of course not in money meant) and which is not a great face everything. He is the 8th cousin of the prince Charle, I have only learnt recently, Fiennes may make no difference, to others this makes no difference not. If somebody has nobility not only in the blood like Fiennes, but one would like to call his representations royal for what he needs honourings? One takes pleasure moments in it around objects then in the cupboard to put where they get covered in dust? Because Fiennes also gives not all nose long with something, he also does not strike on the red carpet in such a way, although it would be pleasant for fans to see him more often on television.
