Ralph Fiennes...love him no matter what.

Ralph Fiennes reading The English Patient on CD

Don't know if this is the right place to put this, and a lot of you probably know of this
item already. I found on Amazon.com a copy of Ralph reading the book The
English Patient. I am looking forward to receiving it, I only ordered it yesterday.
If anyone else has listened to his mellifluous voice reading these words, and have
a comment to make, please let me know.

trugannini, Tessa is right. It says abridged only because its not the entire book. It is a 3 CD set. I've read the book and you don't miss anything by what's left out on the audio recording. The story flows beautifully and feels complete. What I love about this story is that even though the translation from page to screen and from page to audio are very different, they compliment each other exceedingly well. : )

Tessa, you need to listen to the third disc. It's really great! : )

Hi trugannini! With all the talk about this recording, I had to give it another listen when I was in my van this morning. I did look at the box and it says "Abridgment approved by the author." I have an illustrated copy of the movie's screenplay and Mr. Ondaatje contributed a lot to it and the making of the film (According to Anthony Minghella's commentary, Ralph contributed to screenplay as well!). Let me say this about the recording, because it may have been the problem you had with the book. Don't go into it expecting similarities to the film (though you may meet some as you go along). Let it be new to you. It really is a wonderful story and Ralph reads it so well. I love the feel of his voice. He just carries you away. : )

Hi Liza, I also have an illustrated copy of the screen play. I have the film so
firmly embedded in my head, that I will certainly have to open a new door in my mind, and approach it that way. It is fantastic to 'speak' with others, who are as totally committed to this superb actor as I am. My friends laugh at me, and treat me as though I have caught a disease....well, I must say, I do not want a 'cure'. :)
Thank you Liza. I will report back when I have listened to it. :)

I agree with Liza
the book is not the same as the screenplay, don`t expect too much common between them, Trugannini
but Ralph`s voice is the sweetest in the world)))

I hope you enjoy it and can't wait to hear your impressions. : )

You're right, I get the same reactions from people around me. My daughter is really the only person who gets this. : )
