IMBD has it as a "limited" release in the U.S.on September 19. I'm not sure what that means. They said the same with In Bruges and it never played in the theatres around my area (Nashville). I can't wait to see it and am crossing all fingers and toes it plays near me. If anyone knows different, please post!

In Bruges came to a sort-of independent theater real close to my place, so I saw it when it opened and then went back to see it the next four weekends (and I bought the DVD). I loved that movie. I think it did better than they originally expected.

Hi Kim, Try and find out who has "bought" the movie, and where they intend to show it.
Your local theatre manager should be able to direct you to where you can find out. :)

Limited release means that the film will open in a few major cities its first week and, depending on how well it does, open in more cities within 2-4 weeks. I learned a lot about this from following In Bruges. While the movie poster was up in our theatre for a while, the film itself never did make it to Greenville. Like Dana, I ended up seeing it in a small independent theatre in Fort Lauderdale, Florida last May when I was on vacation. : )

I have a feeling The Duchess will have a wider audience. My daughter said she saw a preview for it when she went to the theatre recently. Kim, if this film is coming to Greenville, I'm certain it will play in the Nashville area. We just might not see it till later in September or October.

Yeah...this gives me hope, Liza. :) I agree this should have a wider audience. What do y'all think of Kiera in the roll? I don't know that much about the story but she doesn't seem like she'd have a lot of chemistry with Ralph...now that I think of it, the real characters didn't have chemistry did they??? Ignore me. She really surprised me in Atonement...awesome job. I can't wait....the expended trailer on YouTube looks soooooo good.
Thanks, Kim

Just read on Google that Keira and Ralph have a "harrowing rape scene" in the movie.....and she says that she learnt a few swear words of the period.....surely not :). Why would Ralph's character resort to that extreme behaviour? Did she refuse him? Did he want an heir?
Does anyone know the story well enough to tell us?

"harrowing rape scene" my God! another bad guy character)))
i found on internet some amazing stories about relashionship between Duke of Devonshire and Lady Georgiana Spencer. she married him when she was only 17 years old. and there are stories about her pregnancy and Duke's mistress Elizabeth Foster, here she is

which Lady Georgiana introduced to Duke herself...i can go on and on, it's amazing and very interesting. can't wait to see the movie, it should be rich and colourfull.

I went to the cinema yesterday here in the uk, and saw 'Mama Mia', which is fantastic, everyone clapped at the end and sung a long during the film!!!!!

During the trailers, they showed 'The Duchess', which is on release here on September 5th. It was good to see it on the big screen, to see our gorgeous boy and hear his voice. I can't wait to see it now!!!!!!!!!

It will be released everywhere in the uk, as Keira is our biggest and most popular leading lady, the critics are eagerly awaiting its release and expect it to be an Oscar contender. there is a definite buzz about this film............

I'm looking forward to seeing it. Keira Knightley is fairly popular in the U.S. as well. Hopefully the film will have a wide release here.

I read, I think on IMDb, that it's only for limited release in the US. Anyone else
know about it? :)

Minerva, I don't think he's a Bad Guy in this. I think they were forced to marry, somehow,
and the are both unhappy..... Lovely painting of Elizabeth Foster.... Thank you :)

I've seen the previews for it twice. I think, as far as the trailer went, his character wanted a male heir -- I think he (and others) explained it as "her duty." But she fell in love with another (younger) man and Ralph's character basically tells her she is to produce a male heir (I think she maybe had a daughter the first time? Yes, shows my complete lack of knowledge). She wants to be with the younger man who truly loves her, and, while she loves her husband, she knows he is not one to show love or express love and takes it on personally as he doesn't love her. Then it gets into the whole issue of if she won't stay with him and produce him a male heir (or maybe she has at this point but he doesn't want the disgrace of a divorce), then he tells her she will never see her children if she leaves him for this other man. And I'm thinking the "rape" scene comes up somewhere in there or just before.
I hope it's not such a limited release that it won't see the light of day around here. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I don't think his hair piece does much for him :); but he is still who he is on screen and just commands attention! For some reason, I love to see him get angry in films (when it's related to a woman he loves). He becomes EXTRA passionate and sexy.
